When June was approaching, I was full speed ahead in my blog strategy and life plans. I knew I was going to maximize every hour, of every day- because “you have the same 24 hours as Beyonce”, right? Bullshit. It’s so hard to stay focused on your goals and your priorities when it’s summer, because, let’s face it; rose is always calling your name. Day parties at Dolores Park, road trips to L.A., cocktails with your girls, anything besides sitting down and accomplishing your to-do list. And honestly, even when you are feeling productive, it’s so easy to get brain block, uninspired and discouraged.
How to increase summer productivity!
I’ve got a serious case of the summer slump. And it’s not a negative slump, it’s one of those ones where I have so much fun stuff I’d rather do than get my priorities straight. Setting time aside to write, network, create content and collaborate is hard work! A blog isn’t just all fun and photos. Realizing the research, time and effort it takes to create my content is intense. I have immense respect for those who do it full time, and strive to get there some day. Whether you’re a blogger, an entrepreneur, or simply just slacking at your adult responsibilities, here are some tips to get you on track; so you can have that glass of bubbly guilt-free.
Make a to-do list
What are your non-negotiables? Start with that. These are the things you 100% absolutely have to get done today (or this week). Then the flexible deadline goals, followed by the want-to-do’s. An example of a day off to-do list might look something like this:
+ Exercise (I always put this first so I make sure to prioritize that time)
+ Grocery Shop/Meal Prep
+ Plan weekly content (IG, Twitter, Blog, etc.)
+ Get nails done
+ Take product shots
+ Write 2 blog posts & two Instagram posts
+ Makeup & photos
+ Cocktails with Becca
+ Watch OITNB
So unfortunately, the not-so-fun things come first on the list. For me this equates a higher level of productivity first thing in the morning. Nothing makes me happier than putting a big line through the tasks I have completed, so I can move onto the next. If you are in need of a little motivation, give yourself some reward time at the end of each task completion. (Half hour of a show after cleaning, etc.) I love the Post-It method of to-do lists too, because it’s super visual and satisfying to create and complete. Think- covering your wall or desk with post-it list of things to accomplish, and take them down/throw them out when you do!
Another method, spinning off of your to-do list is Time Blocking. I first heard about time blocking on The Skinny Confidential podcast, and she has a post about it here. Essentially, the method is to maximize your productivity by breaking down your to-do’s into planned time frames, and completing all that you can within that period- not beyond. REMOVE ALL DISTRACTIONS! Phone, computer, tv. that may pull you from what you’re focused on. Prioritizing is obviously going to be your first step with this method as well, and you’ll want to consider a few factors.
+ How much time you have to complete your tasks.
+ Which tasks are the most important to complete first.
+How long is a reasonable amount of time for each individual task.
+ Consider all factors and randoms that may interrupt your plan.
From there, I find this method to be super helpful not only in my personal and blog life, but at work as well. If I know I have an 8-hour shift for example, and three of those hours are dedicated to leading my team on the sales floor, where will I maximize my productivity and complete other time consuming tasks throughout my workday? Even down to my lunch- I have an hour- one half hour I will relax and eat, engage on my socials, etc. The other half hour, I use for writing or research for the blog; non-negotiable. This helps me to incorporate some productivity into my day beyond just nights at home. Here are some other great resources for Time-Blocking tips and templates.
Remain Positive & Self-Care
Above all, keeping yourself in a happy mental state is going to be the largest contributing factor to your success. Knowing I have accomplished something brings me joy. If checking off your to-do list doesn’t tickle you in the same way, then find something that does and reward yourself with it. I make sure my environment when working is how I want it to be. Serene, with a candle lit, some chill music and maybe some essential oils diffusing. (Should I make a playlist? Yes.) Or on the flip side, I’m digging down hardcore cleaning the house, trap music blasting and the windows open letting the sunlight in!
I might get crazy, and treat myself to an iced coffee to kick off my day- YOU NEVER KNOW. But making sure you are taking time to pat yourself on the back, and keep your brain waves zen- unparalleled productivity. I am unfortunate and don’t have a bathtub, but a lot of my girls love having a bath-bomb filled relaxation sesh with a glass of vino at the end of their night. DO IT. I love doing sheet masks and reading a good book. Whatever. Brings. You. Happiness.
A smell proof bag? AnnaBís Lady G
For those of you who don’t know, my boyfriend works for a dispensary here in California. This has served us with so many amazing opportunities for networking, incredible experiences and a plethora of knowledge regarding cannabis and the medical marijuana industry. Recently I was gifted the CUTEST purse from the knowledge queen of dabs herself, Dani Geen. Dani is a concentrate educator, blogger and personal assistant to Steve and Andrew DeAngelo. The Lady G is a gorgeous cognac, leather crossbody- that just so happens to be smell proof. How effing clever. AnnaBís bags are chic and discreet, perfect for daily wear and convenient in situations you need to discreetly conceal your stash.
I love their motto; “Enjoy the Journey”. This speaks true to their product features; helping women to look stylish, and feel confident in secure in whatever they’re carrying. All AnnaBís bags are lined with Aroma-BlocTM technology, which is a made up of layered resin film, and air-tight zippers. So fucking smart. And as for the style aspects and functionalities- even better. This crossbody is the perfect size for daily use and events (I just wore it to Disneyland), and it converts into a fanny-pack like waist bag! The bag is made of genuine Italian leather, and has 3 interior pockets. I love all the compartments and pouches for organizing; lipstick, hand lotion, whatever. Go check out all of AnnaBís styles- they’re dopeeeee. And of course, we want to support a female owned business- right?! Right.
